✈️ THE NEURODYNAMIC QUOTIENT (NDQ) FRAMEWORK

What is the NDQ

NDQ Profiles: Four Core Nervous‑System Patterns

What NDQ Measures

A clear, compassionate map of the nervous system — for children, teens, and adults across the lifespan.

The Neurodynamic Quotient (NDQ) is a core component of the Neurodynamic Navigator System™, created by Dr. Jennifer I. Huffman. NDQ helps families, adults, and educators understand how a person’s nervous system processes stress, safety, learning, autonomy, and connection.

NDQ is not a score. It’s not a label. It’s a navigation system — a way to understand what’s happening beneath behavior so you can respond with clarity instead of overwhelm.

NDQ gives individuals across the lifespan a language for their nervous system — often for the first time.

What NDQ Measures

NDQ Profiles: Four Core Nervous‑System Patterns

What NDQ Measures

NDQ organizes the nervous system into three dynamic domains that shift moment to moment:

  • Dynamic Safety — how the nervous system detects threat or security
  • Dynamic Capacity — cognitive, sensory, emotional, and executive‑function bandwidth available in the moment
  • Dynamic Motivation — the internal drive system shaped by autonomy, meaning, readiness, and nervous‑system alignment

These domains are always in motion — influenced by stress load, sensory input, relational context, internal demands, and environmental unpredictability.

NDQ shows why a person can do something one day and not the next — without shame, blame, or pathologizing.

NDQ Profiles: Four Core Nervous‑System Patterns

NDQ identifies four primary profiles that describe how a person’s nervous system tends to navigate stress, safety, autonomy, and learning:

  • Autonomy Seekers
  • Information Seekers
  • Connection Seekers
  • Sensory‑Regulation Seekers

Each profile reflects a pattern, not a personality type.

Profiles help families and adults understand:

  • What increases stress
  • What restores safety
  • What supports learning
  • What triggers shutdown
  • How autonomy needs shape motivation
  • How sensory load impacts capacity
  • How PDA interacts with the nervous system
  • Why traditional behavioral approaches often fail

NDQ Across the Lifespan

NDQ Profiles: Four Core Nervous‑System Patterns

NDQ applies to children, teens, adults, and older adults, and the patterns evolve over time.

Children

NDQ helps parents understand meltdowns, shutdowns, sensory overload, transitions, and demand‑related stress.

Teens

NDQ clarifies internal demands, identity development, academic pressure, social‑safety needs, and masking fatigue.

Adults

NDQ explains burnout, executive‑function variability, internal pressure loops, relationship patterns, workplace overwhelm, and PDA‑related shutdowns.

Older Adults

NDQ helps explain sensory sensitivity, reduced autonomy, cognitive fatigue, and overwhelm during unpredictability.

NDQ & PDA: A Nervous‑System Integration

NDQ is especially powerful for understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) across the lifespan.

NDQ clarifies:

  • Why demands trigger threat responses
  • How shutdowns emerge from autonomic overload
  • Why “can’t, not won’t” moments occur
  • How autonomy needs shape motivation
  • How internal demands create freeze responses
  • Why traditional behavioral approaches fail
  • How sensory‑stress patterns amplify demand avoidance
  • How PDA shifts from external (childhood) to internal (adolescence/adulthood)

NDQ gives families and adults a non‑shaming, safety‑based map for PDA.

NDQ uses aviation‑infused visuals to make neurobiology intuitive:

  • Dashboards to show stress load
  • Flight paths to show learning readiness
  • Altitude maps to show regulation vs overwhelm
  • Runway diagrams to show transitions
  • Autonomy indicators to show internal pressure
  • Cockpit gauges to show safety signals

These visuals help families, adults, and educators “see” the nervous system the way a pilot sees the sky — clearly, calmly, and with direction.

NDQ Sessions: What They Include

NDQ Sessions: What They Include

NDQ Sessions: What They Include

NDQ sessions help individuals and families understand:

  • Stress‑response pathways
  • Autonomic shifts
  • Shutdown patterns
  • Sensory‑stress interactions
  • Learning readiness
  • Motivation systems
  • PDA‑related overwhelm
  • Safety‑based strategies
  • Nervous‑system alignment

Sessions include:

  • A full NDQ profile
  • A parent‑friendly or adult‑friendly explanation
  • Cockpit‑style visuals
  • A personalized flight path
  • Strategies aligned with nervous‑system needs

NDQ for Adults

NDQ Sessions: What They Include

NDQ Sessions: What They Include

NDQ is transformative for adults who have spent years feeling misunderstood.

It helps adults understand:

  • Internal demand avoidance
  • Burnout cycles
  • Executive‑function variability
  • Relationship patterns
  • Workplace overwhelm
  • Sensory‑stress interactions
  • Identity development
  • Autonomy needs
  • Shutdown and freeze responses

NDQ gives adults a non‑shaming, precise language for their nervous system — often for the first time.
